Join the John Quale Street Team Project

We are starting to organize our street team project for John Quale aka Prince Poppycock.

If you are interested in joining or heading one up in your local area, please join our new group (find it in the group menu).

If you are not a member yet, feel free to apply for registration, and be sure to fill out registration form as completely as possible.

Some of the below info does not apply here, YET, but this is just to give you some info on what a street team is, and does!

WHAT IS A STREET TEAM?

Here is info and history on street teams.

A street team is a term used in marketing to describe a group of people who 'hit the streets' promoting an event or a product. 'Street Teams' are a powerful promotional tool that has been adopted industry wide as a standard line item in marketing budgets by entertainment companies, record labels, the tech industry, corporate brand marketers, new media companies and direct marketers worldwide. Street team members that are highly trained are now called Brand Ambassadors.

History

The now ubiquitous "street team" model was originally developed by urban record labels such as Loud Records, Jive, Bad Boy and Priority Records. Rap labels found an affordable and highly effective bridge to their target audience that did not require the traditional outlets found in print, radio, television mediums and elusive large scale record distribution deals.

It was a modern version of a credible "cool" field marketer working for you with the ability to create hype for your artist (brand) through credible peer-to-peer interactions and viral word-of-mouth influence marketing.

This grass roots tactic was partly born in the mid 1990's from the larger monopolistic record distributors trying to shut out rap and smaller music labels of the day from radio and mass distribution due to the early stigma of "gangsta rap" and "punk" on those genres as a whole.

Street Teams were used by smaller independent record labels as a tool to circumvent the larger out-of-reach distributors and corporate owned record labels. Other independent label owners used street teams as a way to build equity in their stable of artists for the benefit of gaining a courtship by a larger music label or record distributor to merge or sell part or all the company. (see Loud Records sale late 1990s)

For the smaller labels trying to get in the door of the music business, the thinking was in part to build a loyal fan base in key markets first, get strong street hype and "street-cred" first, try to get on the local radio stations through hype/word-of-mouth, then go to the larger record distributors with a much stronger negotiating hand and a solid "sellable" commodity.

Through this method of building a solid fan base with disposable income first, the smaller label wielded greater power in their initial distribution negotiations for the benefit of their music artists and their profit margins. Distribution deals for an "unproven" new artist that came with a built-in fan base, generally received better upfront money deals than music artists had previously received without street teams sharing the music and spreading the word (viral marketing) nationwide.

Street Teamers
The position of street team representative was often filled by fans of an artist or young people looking for an introductory position in the music industry. In many cases, an influential teen referred to as a neighborhood "tastemaker" was sought out or pinpointed by a record label to be used as a conduit to their respective neighborhood, due to their stronger influence over other teens that looked to them for "what's hot" or "what's the next hot thing". The tastemaker was directed to create a team on the streets to make an unsigned music artist more popular through word-of-mouth and hype.

The concept for organized promotion teams in the music business can also be traced back to January 1975, when Starkey and Evans, two teenage KISS fans from Terre Haute, Indiana created the KISS ARMY as a group of fans determined to promote the KISS name. Although this could be more attributed to fan clubs, fans worked together outside of their homes, to promote KISS to other kids at school or while hanging out. This KISS army was quickly taken over by the band KISS itself and army recruits were offered limited edition merchandise and seating.

Usually unpaid, street teams for bands and artists are still often composed of teenagers who are rewarded with free band merchandise or show access in exchange for a variety of actions:

placing stickers and posters in their communities
bringing friends to the shows
convincing friends to buy band merchandise
phoning your local radio station to request their songs be played
bringing vinyl and CDs to local DJs in the clubs where they work
posting to band forums and bulletin boards online
maintaining zines or websites dedicated to the band
In some cases, points are assigned to an individual for a particular action, and those points can be exchanged for tickets to shows, or for band merchandise. Some bands even produce special items just for street team members.

Loud Records/SRC, pioneered the use of street teams to broaden the reach of many urban music artists with no airplay, including the Alkaholiks, Tung Twista and Wu Tang Clan. Loud Records and founder Steve Rifkind also began to see the advantages in the "online street team" model very early.

Highly trained, well groomed street teams that are now employed by corporations to spread a brand message are now referred to as Brand Ambassadors.

Poppycock Pops for Poppycock

John Quale is an amazing new talent on the rise, and is already known for his perfect operatic arias, his rendition of Queens legendary Bohemian Rapsody, and his powerful ability to do stage musicals, as shown in the Yanker Doodle Dandy medley he pulled together for AGT. Now amoung the long list of endless talent John brings us, we must add the ability to belt out a song so bluesy, and jazzy, you would wonder if one of the old divas from yesterday was really under all the poppycock.

See for yourself in this 13 minute, but not too well recorded video taken at The Honey Pot in Tampa, Fla, on 11/26/10

Wigging Out: John Quale, a.k.a 'Prince Poppycock,' at DAR Constitution Hall

The only thing wrong with this news article is that John was born and raised in Virginia, a Virginia native.....

Written by Express contributor Roxana Hadadi
John Quale expected to don geisha makeup and a powdered wig only once, as a favor to a friend with a Los Angeles performance group called Wig Out. The Washington, D.C., native never guessed that the stage persona Prince Poppycock would become a cult favorite of millions of viewers on NBC's "America's Got Talent" this summer — or that those viewers would help him become one of the season's four finalists.

"[I saw] something that I literally thought was just for a certain demographic and realized that it had a much broader appeal — as long as I stopped taking off my clothes and telling naughty jokes," Quale said while on tour with "America's Got Talent," which stops at DAR Constitution Hall Thursday.

Kingdom of Poppycock Network Logo Challenge

We need talented poppy artists to submit ideas for a Logo that can be used internet wide.

Ironically, with much humor tho, I am finding that altho it is a legitimate word in the English language, the word poppycock is sometimes not very well received. Go figure, LMAO!!

Therefore, I want a logo that specifically reads the initials KoP, writing in Upper/Lower/Upper case. This will be the logo I use when the banner is too big, or the censors say oh oh!

I know there are poppies who good artists, I have seen the art, so I am reaching out to the poppies of the world to create our logo.

All poppies are welcome to submit work, but you must register (it's free and easy) if you are not already a member. Please submit your graphics ideas in the forum at the network. You can add pics by using the picture icon in the rich editor menu when you reply to the post there.

I hope some of you will take me up on this challenge, you will get full credit if your art is chosen.

After we have enough ideas and entries, I will choose the logo, and if I have a split favorite, the network will help by voting.

Create Poppies, Create!

Part 2: Meet and Swoon time!

By Sandie Dapoz

(I refuse to apologize, in advance, for all the exclamation marks and words in caps… it was just that kind of experience, so proceed at your own risk!)

We hurried into the line for the Meet and Greet as soon as they told us where to line up, and were near the front, yay! (Although I found out later that if you were at the back, there was more time, and the Security NOTZI’s were not so… NOTZI-ish.)

I got really anxious in the line, because we could see how it was set up, and HRN was at the end of the line. We were at the top of a down stairway and when I went to move down a step as the person in front of me had done, the security person there all but yelled at me “DON’T YOU MOVE!!!” Yikes!! That was my FIRST clue.

There was still no one who had reached Poppys’ table and he appeared very tired, was tugging on his wig and twiggling around like he actually didn’t feel well. I heard him say to the security person standing nearest to his spot that he thought he would like to just walk around and meet and greet the fans, and he was told to stay where he was!!!! I cannot imagine anyone being ruder to the prince than that person was! GRRRR!

When we got down to floor level, there was still no one at his table and I said to the NOTZI there, “Can we just go under the rope here? We only want to meet Poppycock anyway…?” I was then told that we HAD to go thru the complete line, stopping for each person!!!!!! Even though I felt bad for those other top 10 winners, I was really offended! I PAID dearly for the chance to meet HRN and I am NOT a third grader in a school lunch line!

We continued to the entrance area to the tables, and there was a guy standing there. He wasn’t wearing the vest that the rest of the NOTZIs were, so I thought he was in line to enter. I stepped up next to him, and when he put his hand on me and said, “DO NOT MOVE,” I realized HE was security, too.

Furious, I looked up at him, then down at my arm where his hand was, and back up at him. He removed his hand. Quickly. I said “Do you work for AGT or the theater?” and he said “the theater.” Which I am pretty sure was not strictly true.

Don’t get me wrong, I DO understand the need for security completely. I do feel, however, that they were totally over the top in carrying out their responsibilities! Especially given that this was Indianapolis, no bag checks were ever carried out and folk were free to bring in what they liked. Not to mention, you have to take care of the patrons just like you do the celebrities, manners wise! These people were RUDE!

OK, got that off my chest….. (to resume my story after I was so rudely interrupted, LOL!)

Finally we were let in to the meet area, and stopped at each table as instructed. I felt it important to be on best behavior as a Poppy, so we meeted and greeted each of them and they were lovely and interesting.

Then THE moment of the evening arrived and I approached HRN! Oh. My. Goodness! He was SO sparkly! And even more beautiful close up! FLAWLESS. He looked down at me (I am only 5’2”) and I actually managed to squeak out “Poppycock!!!” I was still lost in admiration of his glitterification….. even his lips sparkled!! He said “Yes!?” and I managed to snap out of a full fugue internal swoon and say “I’m one of your poppies!”

He smiled and said, “Yes, you are!” Ohmy. Now what? Everything I intended to say went right out my left ear….. so I said “My name is Sandie Dapoz,” and before I could go on, he said “I know that name! Sandie with an IE, right?”

OK. I confess. At that point my brain AND my heart took a nosedive into total shock!! (I believe that he knew this because I had introduced him several weeks before to a friend who may be able to help his career, but I really can’t give any more details on that until any deal that happens is finalized!) So I asked him if he had heard from this person, and he backed off a little and looked at me from under his eyelashes and said “Actually, he never answered me….”

I wanted to just drop thru the floor!!! I was SO shocked that I blurted out “Why that little booger!!!!” Talk about a surreal experience…. I instantly COULD NOT BELIEVE what I had just said and I was completely and totally embarrassed! My face must have been waaaaay beyond red!

Meanwhile, our charming prince continued, “Well, I just assumed he was really busy, you know….” And paused for a breath, then finished, “But YES, that little BOOGER!!!”

I wanna tell you, every single poppy out there, I wanted to laugh so hard at THAT I nearly peed my pants!!!!!!! BWAHHHHAAAAAHAAAAA!!! What a truly funny thing to say! We all know the prince is witty and very quick minded, but this just killed me! Those beautiful, red, sparkly lips forming the word “BOOGER!” Ohmydeargawd!!!

Priceless!!! I will NEVER forget that moment. Never!

Then I got out two pics I had brought for him to sign, one was the elegant shot Shawn posted not too long ago that shows him in three-quarter view making a moue, and the other was a piece of my fan art showing him with butterfly wings as John, surrounded by a collage background of different Poppycocks!

I had brought a full color version and a sepia/color version and asked him which he liked better…. He looked down at them, and ran his finger over them, telling me who took each of the Poppycock pix, and then chose the full color one. So I gave that one to him! Then I asked him to sign the other one, and he did…. Writing both PP and John Quale on it. I was thrilled!

The security NOTZI said, “Time to go!” and I blurted out, “One more minute!” and then gave him the gifts I had brought: some bling for Steve to use as wanted, a t-shirt of my own design, showing Walt Whitman surrounded by nature with the words “To Fly Away,” a tiny little antique balancing clown made of metal, which he took from me and said “I love him!!!” and a smallish tin full of collage and art making goodies, for the bus! I explained this to him and said “in case you get bored on the bus!” and he looked surprised and just leaned over and grabbed me in a hug!!!!!!!!!!

{{{{{ THUD!!!!! }}}}}}}}}

That was the second moment I will never forget! ♥

It was time to go, but my heart was singing as we left. I cannot image having a better time meeting our dear HRN than that. You know how you always think you will cry, throw up on your shoes, become speechless and a total dork at such a moment? The truth is that John is VERY good at putting others at ease, even though HE is shy himself.

As we walked away, the NOTZI near by said to me, “That was really sweet of you!” And HRN seemed a little happier…. I’d like to think I cheered him up, just a weensy little tad!

It was so much more than I expected, and again, it speaks to how charming, and captivating, and polite, and talented, and sparkly he really is!

Interview With Nefarious ^~ (PART EIGHT) by the odd~ist, Patrick Barnes

So this is what the prince felt when he climbed out out of that Faberge egg space-pod, I thought. I felt a chill that had nothing at all to do with the air. There are some who say that Hell is the complete absence of love. If there was ever a place that lacked any warmth or love, it was The Nefarious Nether Region. The very color faded to grays and blacks. Among the winding, dark roads and dark forest sat the Nefarious compound.

I’m meeting a Prince tonight!

I went to the AGT tour show in Indy on Friday night (Oct. 22). This is my story and I’m sticking to it!
by Sandie Dapoz

I can’t believe it but I started getting ready on MONDAY for Friday night! Took my blouse to the dry cleaner, Bought lipstick, nail polish, eye shadow, blush, and a FREAKING CURLING IRON!!!!!!! Being a child of the 60’s who doesn’t normally
use makeup or sport curls except on very special occasions, I did not have ANY of
that stuff on hand! What the heck is THAT all about, HaaaHaaaHaa!!

My hubby’s comment was “Jeez, you don’t do all that for ME!” delivered with a pouty face….. “Honey, it’s for Poppycock! I’m meeting a prince tonight! I MUST be fit to stand in his presence!!!” “Oh, for Poppycock! Well, that makes it OK then,” he deadpanned. And then grinned.

Got to the show neatly coiffed and of course, as ravishing as I could be, and found our seats, which were SUPERB…. Row 6 Stage left, strategically placed near those fabulous steps that HRN dances down while clad in a cloud of golden magic. ;o)

The show began and the Champers party was ON! For his first number, the minute he peeked thru those curtains the place came alive with screams and SQUEEEEES!!! He danced onto the stage and into our hearts, and you could feel the audience just INHALING him! I got my mask out and waved it around whenever he came to our side of the stage, and by the end of the song it had fallen apart, for heaven’s sake! Standing Ovation #1.

I was torn between wanting to WATCH him and taking pictures, so I compromised with myself and did a little of each. HIS VOICE IN PERSON IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! I
think my ears were transformed to little shells that would capture every nuance, every note, Every breath, and my heart rose with happiness! Wow, he knocked me out!!!!!!! His talk to the audience about the Trevor Project was so heartfelt and humble and moving, I could feel those around me responding to his sincere words. Huge applause after his talk.

Next up was Bohemian Rhapsody and it was a masterpiece! Love that outfit, love that song, my favorites! He was magical, playful and even naughty, teasing the audience with his performance. I can only say it was PERFECTION. Something that must be seen to be believed. Something that stays in the heart forever. You know how sometimes you hear a song from long ago and it triggers a vivid, forgotten memory? This performance was like that, except, the memory was of another world completely, one where you feel happy and free, floating above everything below. One where you are completely IN the moment, and the energy of the performer actually takes you to another place. Yes. It was like that. Standing Ovation #2.

It Gets Better!

John Quale, the creator of Prince Poppycock gives a message to gay youth and outsiders that are bullied in school, that everything will get better, and dreams do come true. The 1st address was made on Sept 8th, to a broadcast television audience of 12 million. Below is a description of his Yankee Doodle Dandy performance on Sept. 7th, where he discusses the Harvey Milk imagery, Liberace inspired costume and message to Gay Youth: Swathed in a red, white and blue cape and top hat decked with silver stars, the Prince descended from the rafters on a platform backed by whirling sparklers, singing the final verse of "The Star Spangled Banner" before moving into "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Stars and Stripes Forever." With its kickiness, baton-twirling majorettes, and considerable pyrotechnics, the routine was a first-rate piece of entertainment -- one that got Prince Poppycock voted into the Final Four contestants on the #1 show of the season. But underneath the glamorous facade, the number made poignant references to the American civil rights struggle, while still remaining, ultimately, a celebration of American openness and individualism. "As a nation, our strength lies in diversity," Poppycock says. "We are a nation of individualists, and as Americans, we seek to develop what makes us unique to its fullest potential. The more fully realized we are, the more different we are, so it's really our differences that make us strong. And I believe that this country as a whole, which has opened its heart to my theatrics, feels the same way." With a video backdrop that included images of Abraham Lincoln; civil rights leader Rosa Parks, women's rights leader Susan B. Anthony; and gay rights martyr and politician Harvey Milk, Poppycock's act acknowledged the inequalities of America -- and the struggles of those who tried to address them -- in the past and present. Standing in front of the images of Milk and Parks, the openly gay singer solemnly recited, "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal." Whipping open his cape to reveal a sequined shorts suit and striking a pose, he added, with a wink: "Of course, some men are more equal than others!" and broke into a Busby Berkeley-style production number that included a pinwheel of showgirls dressed as sailors; majorettes; Statues of Liberty; and American flags. But though Poppycock's vision of America isn't blind to its injustices, he's still an old-fashioned patriot with an optimistic view of America's potential. "I love my country," he emphasizes. "This act is not ironic." Instead, he says, it commemorates America's ability to be inclusive, and it is this open-armed image of his country that inspired the spectacular stageshow, which he told television viewers was "Poppycock's love letter back to America." He adds that the number was his way of thanking the American public -- who had put him through to the Top 10 -- for embracing him. "I wanted to show," Poppycock says, "that America is a place that has room for everyone." And his response, when he heard on Wednesday's live results show that he'd be voted into the Final Four, made it clear that he viewed his election as a victory for that vision of American inclusiveness as well as a testament to the power -- and the essential Americanness -- of remaining true to yourself even when you fall outside the norm. As he told the "America's Got Talent" audience after his win, "To every kid out there who gets picked on or feels like an outsider: I want you to believe that life is magical, and I want you to look at me right now and understand that dreams can come true."
